Tier 4 General is a Point Based Category and points are awarded for Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and Funds for Maintenance. A Tier 4 (General) student must be at least 16 years old.

You can apply for a Tier 4 (General) student visa to study in the UK if you’re 16 or over and you:

The earliest you can apply for a visa is 3 months before you start your course.

You’ll usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks. You can check visa processing times for your country.

You must meet the full requirements of the Immigration Rules and have 40 points in total as shown in the table below:

Points required: 40

You must have a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a fully licensed Tier 4 sponsor. 30 Points
You must have enough money to cover course fees and monthly living costs (also known as maintenance or funds) 10 Points

It is very common for students to be refused Tier 4 General student visa on grounds of student not being a genuine student. The genuineness issue is usually raised by the Home Office due to lack of knowledge on part of the student about the course he/she is going to study in the Uk as well as relevant of the course to the career the student wants to pursue as a result of completion of the course etc. The students are often questioned by the Entry Clearance Officer as to why they have chosen a specific institution of study and whether or not they have considered other institutions as well before enrolling for their course with the institution of study they have chosen.
